Its exciting news! Effatha House, founded by St. Martincsa, has now been officially approvedas a L'Archeproject. It is the first L'Arche community in Kenya. It is located in the townof Nyahururu -the highest town in Kenya. The first core members are Munyua, Musa, Paul and Susan. The new project is developing quickly. There is already a building for a future workshop, but at the moment the main focus is on the house. Each day is completely filled. There are plenty of visitors who come, and lots of cleaning which has to be done. But in free time, allwholive in EffathaHouse enjoy trips out, picnics, dancing, prayers and the most favourite in most L'Archecommunities celebrating. Of course, in a brand new community, there are even more reasons to celebrate - welcoming new core members, welcoming assistants, birthday, welcoming guests for a meal, and allthe little moments of discovering something new. Here is what Paul Kariuki, one of the volunteer assistants, wrote to me about life in Effatha House : "We have acquired a number of life skills, but most importantly, the joy that has filled our lives cannot be hidden. This gives the home an inspiration to continue in this beautiful journey. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the L'Arche communities for giving us this special gift and an opportunity tolearn from them." Here is more exciting news-especially for mepersonally. I, mywife Agnieszka, and our baby daughterbSara, are moving from L'ArcheBrecon(UK) to Kenya by the end of the year, to share our lives with this new community. It is sad to leave Brecon, but we welcome the challenge of contributing to the development of this new L'Arche project ! L’Arche Zimbabwe send news ... (Jully '09)
The year has very well began for us. Esther goes henceforth to a grammar school and everything takes place very well. She occupies the 24th place on 45 pupils. She is not completely satisfied by her performance and said that she was going to make better .The director and the vice- director of the school are very happy of its adaptation. They are all two impressed by the way she adapted herself to the professors and by the challenges which she presents them at the same time.Once, the head teacher punished the girls after the church for something that they had made. Esther was a part of it. She put on knees and said that she was really sorry. She was not punished.Afterward, she went to see the head teacher and asked her, " but Madam, how can you punish people dressed for the church just after the office? " The head teacher was not angry but rather surprised. The assistant to the director is a religious sister. Esther says to her " My sister, I love you. I want to be your friend." This sister thus became the friend of Esther and every evening, while she made her round in dormitories, she came to say good evening to Esther. An evening, she did not make it, and in her first course in the class of Esther, she was welcomed by one " But my sister, you did not say to me good night yesterday evening, thus I did not well sleep ". While our country crosses changes of government and economy, what we have to live is surprising. At first there was nothing to buy in stores. Food was very expensive. Thanks to Tessa Till and Jane Salmonson of " The Arche Overseas Development Fund " (ODF), we had food parcels and clothes. Now stores are full of products of South Africa. They are always expensive, but accessible. The dollar is the source of these problem. Those who work in the and the manufacturing are favored. Our community is well. We began to produce some tissue batik and we are lucky to have the Brother David, who takes charge of a big part of the sale.He has to obtain a diploma in marketing to the school of the Arche. The introduction of a new bus, magnificent, made us very popular and the school receives more requests. Cynthia Foroni , assistant long term, left joining her husband because it waits for a baby. We look forward to having the beautiful second home. The works soon begin. By Alice Chatindo , community leader.
